Variable Pitch Propeller Shaft

This variable pitch propeller shaft is made in China by Microcosm and is of a very high quality. The tube, blades and shaft are made of stainless steel, blades laser-welded to increase the strength. The shaft runs in two stainless steel bearings and also the pitch control lever. Other parts are mainly made of brass.

Compared with ordinary fixed-pitch propellers, the main advantages of a variable pitch propeller are:

1. The driving engine does not need a reversing mechanism, hence simplifying the engine needed whether steam or internal combustion.

2. The speed and direction of the boat can be controlled even when the engine is running at a constant speed. Hence a simple single cylinder steam engine can be used - removing the problem of the engine not being able to start in all crank prosition.

3. A straightforward single servo can be used to control the speed and direction of the boat.
