Twin cylinder inline, double acting oscillating steam engine kit.

The oscillating steam engine evolved from late 18th-century proposals, with Joseph Maudslay patenting a marine version in 1827, followed by improvements from John Penn & Sons, who built the first two-cylinder oscillating steam engine in 1841 for the paddle steamer Diesbar.

This type of engine was favoured in the 19th century for paddle steamers due to its simplicity, compactness, and lighter weight, as the oscillating cylinders served as both the valve and the connecting rod, eliminating the need for separate valves and connecting rods. These characteristics continue to make oscillating steam engines a popular choice for smaller model steam boats and launches today.

This twin cylinder inline, double acting oscillating steam engine kit is a well proven design going back decades. It comes with a displacement lubricator, has built in reversing and speed control and will operate comfortably with steam pressures around 45 - 50 psi. All parts are fully machined, made mainly of brass castings and the kit is easy to assemble using the assembly instructions provided - see "Documentation" tab on this page.

Suitable to power boats up to 1.1 meters long with displacement of around 40lbs/18kg with a propeller up to 3″/75mm diameter - (Caldercraft: Imara, Marie Felling & Resolve).
