About Us at Chiltern Model Steam

Who we areSupplier of model engineering models and parts.

Located in the English Midlands, not far from Iron Bridge where the industrial revolution started, Chiltern Model Steam was established to:

  • Design and manufacture a range of model steam engines kits, modular in design and produced in large enough volumes to make them affordable - at prices that just covers our costs.

  • Produce materials that can be used in education using the model steam engines as a focal "hands-on" point of learning - available free of charge.

As one of the founding ideas behind Chiltern Model Steam is education, see our Educational pages. in assembling the models we hope our customers will learn the basics of how steam engines work, their mechanical principles and how the various components are manufactured.

Over time we hope to build a package of materials which can be used in schools and museums to help in some small way to inspire the next generation of Brunel's, Stephenson's and Watt's.

Please note we are a small family run outfit operating at very low levels of profit. Given that we therefore have to earn a living from other sources, please be patent in your communications with us but rest assured you will not be ignored (usual technical failings permitting).

Payment, Refund and Return PolicyWe always try to do our best

By clicking "Buy now" customers are directed to PayPal's WEB site. we, Chiltern Model Steam Engines, therefore do not see or have access to any customer bank or debit/credit card details. Once payment has been made, PayPal credits our account and sends us an email of customer details and what they have purchased so we can complete the order.

Please contact us for alternative payment methods.

We would then acknowledge receipt of the order and shipping method and date via email, assuming an email address has been provided by PayPal.

In addition to PayPal Buyer Protection we offer a full refund for our engine kits (excluding post and packaging costs to return the engine kit) within 30 days of purchase if you are not completely satisfied with the model steam engine kit. We offer the same for our boilers provided they have not been fired/steamed and are in "as New" condition and original packaging.

First please contact us and let us know why you are not happy and we will do our best to rectify the situation. If we are not able to do so just re-pack the model steam engine kit and send it back to us for a refund.

In keeping with their historic nature please note that due to the way the engine parts are made, that is hand-finished, there may be cosmetic irregularities that do not stop the engines from functioning as designed - these are not therefore considered faults.

GaranteeIn the Unlikely event

In the unlikely event that a problem should arise with one of our engines, which can be attributed to a manufacturing or material defect only, we ask that you consult ourselves initially and then if necessary return the defective part, together with a brief note explaining the problem and will be pleased to repair of if appropriate replace the offending part, free of charge.

If goods are being returned to us, the customer is responsible for all freight charged and shall bear the risk of accidental loss or damage.

The warranty offered is valid for a period of twelve (12) months commencing from the date of the invoice and is rendered immediately void should the title to the product be transferred by resale or any other means.

Additionally, the warranty does not extend to cover goods where a defect is caused by abnormal use, misuse or neglect.

Due to the nature and operation of steam boilers no warranty can be offered. However, we will review each case individally and do our best to resolve any problems.
